The Three Modalities

The three modalities describe a sign’s posture toward change, by where it sits in its season.

Cardinal
The cardinal signs open each season: the initiating ones, better at the first move than at the long middle.
Fixed
The fixed signs hold the middle of each season: the sustaining ones, hard to start and harder to divert.
Mutable
The mutable signs close each season: the adapting ones, at ease with a plan that changes and less so with one that does not.
