Year Relations

Each year’s branch stands in one of six classical relations to your birth branch.

The same branch (本命年)
A year standing on your own branch again runs heavy: the same animal twice, met at full weight, neither help nor opposition — the year asks to be taken on its own terms.
A six-combination (六合)
A year in six-combination with your birth branch is the easiest kind of company: the year arrives already inclined toward you.
A triangle of affinity (三合)
A year inside your triangle of affinity means reinforcement: the year pulls with the chart rather than against it.
An opposition (六冲)
A year opposite your birth branch is a collision: what the year brings, the chart did not schedule, and the work is absorbing rather than winning.
A harm relation (六害)
A year that harms your birth branch is erosion: small frictions rather than one confrontation, wearing at what was already set.
No classical relation
A year with no classical relation to your birth branch is open water: neither help nor opposition, and the year is what you make of it.
