Year Animals

The twelve-year animal cycle — what the year branch is taken to lend everyone born under it.

Rat
The Rat opens the cycle: resourceful, early to see an opening, and happier with a plan that can be changed quietly.
Ox
The Ox works at one pace and does not much care who is watching, which is most of its reputation for stubbornness.
Tiger
The Tiger moves first and negotiates afterwards — hard to deter, and not always sure what it has started.
Rabbit
The Rabbit prefers the indirect route, avoids the argument it could lose, and keeps more in reserve than it shows.
Dragon
The Dragon takes the large view and the large gesture, and is least at ease in a small arrangement.
Snake
The Snake decides slowly in private and moves quickly in public, so the decision rarely looks like one.
Horse
The Horse needs somewhere to be going, and reads a settled situation as one that has stopped rather than one that is finished.
Goat
The Goat works by attachment rather than by plan, and gives ground on everything except what it actually minds about.
Monkey
The Monkey solves the problem in front of it, including the ones that would have solved themselves.
Rooster
The Rooster keeps the standard and says so, which is the same trait admired at a distance and resented up close.
Dog
The Dog holds a position on principle and will hold it past the point of advantage.
Pig
The Pig closes the cycle: accommodating, slow to suspect, and harder to take advantage of twice.
